I'd say go north. While Baton Rouge is safer than N.O., it's still prone to serious damage. The LSU-App St. game was moved up in anticipation of the hurricane. Get out.

They say Baton Rouge could get a bigger hit than with Katrina. They are asking that everyone south of highway 10 evacuate now. Sheesh!

You'll be ok in the Baton Rouge, LA area; I'm from Louisiana and I live farther in the in-lands. We'll probably get a lot of flooding, power outages, wind speed, and trash everywhere.

This is projected to be the "Storm of the Century"- worse than Katrina!
I found a site to listen to Live Emergency Scanners to track the evacuation and emergency efforts online.
Listen in here, and spread the link far and wide.
The more people know, the better chance we have of beating it this time.....http://www.heartlandoutdoorsman.com/smf/…

check around your home and make sure you don't have dead branches or dieing trees that could fall on your house. I'm in baton rouge and a tree fell on my house and car during katrina. i am more worried about that than flooding here. and of course having no ac for a week or 2

Hurricane Gustav will most certainly have an affect on Baton Rouge, if only in the form of high wind damage and heavy rain accumulation. I'm south of Hammond and I plan to stay, however that is an individual choice that no one else can make for you.

It will definitely be affected strongly, but I would rely on information from local authorities about evacuating. My guess is they won't recommend it unless you live in an area that floods.
You can find links to your local media coverage of the storm on http://www.USAMediaGuide.com/Louisiana.h…
You can see the projected path of the storm, and find links to local TV and newspaper coverage, live streaming webcams in the affected areas, preparation guides, plus links to the National Hurricane Center coverage of the storm on http://www.USAMediaGuide.com

it is a possibility that gustav could come up the mouth of the mississippi river and remain strong from the river waters as it hits baton rouge. storm surges will only be from the lower lakes and coast, but baton rouge might be hit hard.
make sure you prepare for a week or two or even three of power outages. fill your bathtubs with water. stock up on food, water, diapers, cigarettes, etc. a generator is WONDERFUL. keep your gas tanks full in your car.
go outside and remove anything that might fly. flower pots, wind chimes, etc. move it indoors if possible, if not, at least lay it on the ground near a structure.
i live in northwest livingston parish, and i'm staying.
i also have my gun loaded, but that's just me.
so pray that your home is not damaged from winds and tornados, hold on to your butt, and prepare for no power for a while.

Baton Rouge is far enough inland for it to be OK to stay, unless it has been recommended that people of B.R. evacuate. After Katrina, I do not understand why anyone would not evacuate. They are allowing pets to accompany evacuees now. If you can't afford to evacuate, there are resources to help now. If anything good came from the atrocities seen in the aftermath of Katrina, it is the resources available to the people of the gulf coast that were not there 3 years ago. I hope to God that Gustav will not be as devastating. People of the gulf coast are in my prayers!

That far inland the winds will not be as strong as closer to the coast, but likely will still be quite strong for a time (based on the current projected track). Baton Rouge will very likely get very heavy rains, and it should be stressed that while much of the attention is placed on the winds, it is inland flooding that is the most damaging and deadly aspect of a tropical system. You probably would not need to evacuate unless you live in a flood prone area. Still, be prepared for possible power outages that could last a while, even there.

The best indication of safety is how emergency management in the state is handling things. All of the aid organizations are setting up shop here, including ones run by the government, so I don't think they'd be here if they thought it was dangerous. Still, the NHC forecast calls for wind gusts of up to 90 mph on Monday, and there's always the possibility of small tornadoes being spawned. Stay inside, away from windows and you should be fine, provided you're not in a flood zone.
